“This is Liszt-playing on a grand scale, putting Cohen among the greats. He yields little to Horowitz’s famous RCA recording in color and temperament. Cohen mingles narrative and textual clarity with a musical maturity and heady virtuosity in the Richter class.” (Gramophone)

Altenburg Arts and the Orchestra of the Music Makers (OMM) are proud to jointly present the great Brazilian-born pianist Arnaldo Cohen, in honour of the 125th death anniversary of Johannes Brahms.

Once described by Yehudi Menuhin as “one of the greatest pianists I have ever heard”, Cohen has been celebrated and loved for decades around the world for the musical authority and blistering virtuosity he brings to his performances. Over four evenings, he will bring his extraordinary pianism and expressive insights to some of Brahms’ best-loved masterpieces.

With the beloved T’ang Quartet, Singapore’s foremost chamber music group, Cohen will perform the Piano Quintet, the crown of Brahms’ chamber music, before joining forces with celebrated Chinese Australian cellist Qin Li-Wei in the fierily passionate Cello Sonata No. 2 in F major. With OMM, Cohen will play Brahms’ monumental Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, to which he will bring his “big sound that never splinters and is capable of any kind of nuance” (New York Times), among other magisterial qualities.

To round out this milestone celebration of Brahms’ Romantic legacy, OMM will present the Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56 “Scottish” by Felix Mendelssohn, whose own 175th death anniversary the world also commemorates this year. The work is replete with jaunty melodies and conjures an enchanting world of ancient ruins and windswept landscapes. OMM will be conducted by Lien Boon Hua.
